Orlando Travel Guide: Events, Business Travel & Local Experiences
Orlando is best known around the world for its famous theme parks, but the city offers much more than roller coasters and resort vacations. As one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States, Orlando is also a major destination for conventions, business travel, sporting events, and entertainment.
With a thriving restaurant scene, vibrant neighborhoods, beautiful lakes, and world-class event venues, Orlando offers plenty to explore beyond the theme parks.
As someone who has lived in Orlando for more than 13 years, I’ve seen firsthand how the city has grown into a dynamic destination with incredible local experiences. Whether you’re visiting for a conference, sporting event, or weekend getaway, knowing where to stay and what to do outside the tourist areas can make a huge difference.
Why Visit Orlando?
Orlando is one of the most visited cities in the United States, but many travelers are surprised by how much there is to do beyond the theme parks.
Highlights of visiting Orlando include:
Major conventions and trade shows at the Orange County Convention Center
A growing food and craft brewery scene
Beautiful lakefront parks and outdoor spaces
Professional and collegiate sporting events
Vibrant local neighborhoods with restaurants, art, and nightlife
Easy access to beaches and natural springs within a short drive
Orlando is also a major hub for events and conferences, making it a frequent destination for business travelers.
Things to Do in Orlando

Visitors often discover that Orlando has plenty to offer outside the major attractions.

Visit Lake Eola Park
Located in the heart of downtown Orlando, Lake Eola is known for its iconic fountain, walking paths, and skyline views.
Discover the Mills 50 District
This neighborhood is known for its diverse international food scene, independent shops, and vibrant street art.
Attend a Sporting Event
Orlando is home to several professional sports teams and hosts major sporting events throughout the year.
Visit Local Springs
Central Florida has some of the most beautiful natural springs in the state, perfect for kayaking, swimming, and outdoor adventures.

- WHEN TO VISIT
Best Time to Visit Orlando
Orlando is a year-round destination, but different seasons offer different experiences. My personal recommendation? Choose Spring or Winter. It’ll be the least crowded and the best temps for people not used to our brutal summers.
Spring
Pleasant weather and outdoor festivals make spring a great time to explore the city. Our state fairs & festivals are usually late February-early March.
Summer
Summer is the busiest season due to tourism and conventions, but it also brings lively nightlife and events. Just be aware that it will be hot, it will be humid, and it's going to rain for probably an hour every day. Thanks, hurricane season.
Fall
Fall offers slightly cooler weather and fewer crowds in many parts of the city. Remember that hurricane season lasts until November, with peak storms usually falling in September. On the other hand, this is a great time of year for fall farm visits.
Winter
Winter is one of the most comfortable times to visit, with mild temperatures and numerous events. If you're not from here, you'll think the 50-60 degree temps feel great, but us locals will be in down jackets.

- FAQs
Orlando Travel FAQs
If you’ve got questions about things to do in Orlando or how to get around, I’ve got answers.
Got a question?
I get it. Travel can be intimidating. Feel free to email me with any questions you may have, and I’ll do my best to answer them.
Is Orlando worth visiting if you’re not going to the theme parks?
Yes. Orlando offers excellent restaurants, vibrant neighborhoods, sporting events, and outdoor experiences beyond the theme parks.
What is Orlando known for besides Disney?
Orlando is a major hub for conventions, business travel, sports, and entertainment.
Where should business travelers stay in Orlando?
The International Drive and Convention District areas are ideal for conference attendees. If you’ll be visiting corporate offices, you’ll probably want to look at Downtown or Maitland areas. I’ll help you narrow down your neighborhood when we discuss your trip needs.
How far is Orlando from the beach?
Many Florida beaches are about one hour from Orlando, making them great day trips. Daytona and Cocoa Beach will be the two closest for day trips. My preferred beach is Sarasota, but with the 2 hour drive, that one works best if you can do a one-night stay in the Tampa area.
