Upstate New York Travel Guide: Mountains, Lakes & Weekend Escapes
Upstate New York is one of those places people think they know until they actually go.
It’s not just “north of NYC.” It’s waterfalls, mountain towns, scenic drives, cozy lakeside stays, and some of the best fall foliage in the country.
The best part? You don’t need weeks to explore it. With the right plan, you can build an incredible long weekend or road trip hitting multiple regions, each with its own vibe.
I focus on four standout areas: the Hudson Valley, Capital Region, Adirondacks, and Lake George. Why? Because this is where I grew up. I know the ins and outs of the area and I’m pleased to share it with you. Together, these locations give you a mix of food, nature, small towns, and classic Northeast scenery.
Why Visit Upstate New York?
Upstate New York is perfect for travelers who want a mix of scenery, charm, and flexibility without the intensity of a big city trip. Since this is a quieter destination, it’s perfect for families and solo travelers.
Highlights include:
Some of the best fall foliage in the U.S.
Easy weekend getaways from NYC and the Northeast
Scenic drives through mountains, lakes, and small towns
Outdoor activities year-round (hiking, skiing, boating)
Historic towns, local markets, and food experiences
A slower pace that actually feels like a break
Spoiler alert: this is one of those trips that feels way more relaxing than it looks on paper. I didn’t appreciate it enough growing up there, but now I find myself missing the things I took for granted.
Top Things to Do in Upstate New York

There’s a lot to do here but it’s less about checking boxes and more about how you spend your time.
Enjoy Fall Flavors
Fall is peak season for a reason. Be sure to visit a farm or pumpkin patch. The apple cider donuts will change your life.
Take a Scenic Drive
Upstate is built for road trips. Winding roads, mountain views, lakes... You’ll want to stop constantly to take in the views.
Visit Local Wineries & Farms
The Hudson Valley in particular has incredible wineries, cideries, and farm-to-table spots.
Get Out on the Water
Lake George and Adirondack lakes are perfect for boating, kayaking, or just relaxing by the shore.
Hit the Theme Park
Disney isn't your only theme park option. Head to Six Flags Great Escape and stay at the Lodge & Indoor Waterpark.
Hike in the Adirondacks
Whether you want an easy trail or a serious summit, there’s something for every level.
- WHEN TO VISIT
Best Time to Visit Upstate New York
Each season here feels completely different, so it depends on what kind of trip you want. If you’ve made it this far down the page then you probably already know where my bias is.
Spring
This is a quieter season, with blooming landscapes and fewer crowds. Just keep in mind, temps can still be pretty chilly. It's not unusual to see snow in April or even May. Most pools don't open until Memorial Day.
Summer
This is the perfect time of year for lakes, boating, and outdoor dining. While it might be a bit warm, hikes are great this time of year too.
Fall
Peak foliage, crisp weather, and the most popular time to visit. The NYS official fruit is the apple and if you visit in fall, you'll find out why. Apple flavored everything!
Winter
Snowy, cozy, and ideal for skiing or cabin getaways. I'll admit, Upstate New York after a fresh snowfall is PEAK winter beauty. Just be aware the heaviest snows are more in January/February.
Fun fact!
The Capital Region is my hometown! I moved away at 19, but a piece of me will always be back in Troy.
